About The Coach

A drawing of the coach in
front of a loco.
The vehicle we are travelling in today is a Leyland Tiger Cub with Burlingham Seagull bodywork. It entered service with Whittle's of Highley (Shropshire) in 1957, and is believed to have been used on tours throughout England and Wales. It seats 41 people and is powered by a Leyland 350 engine.

The coach remained with Whittle's throughout its working life and was withdrawn by them in 1980 or thereabouts, having clocked up approximately 400,000 miles. Its main use in later years was on schools services and as standby for the rest of the fleet.

Mr. Bernard Rogers acquired the coach in 1993. Restoration work has been continuous from that time and is still ongoing. It is being refurbished to its original condition and bears the blue and red livery which it carried when new.

In its preserved life the coach has been used for a number of local trips in association with the SVR, including Junior Club outings and has also been taken 'home' to the Leyland Commercial Vehicle Museum. Several preserved vehicle rallies have been attended, including our own Vintage Vehicle events at Kidderminster. Recently the coach has been featured in filming work for the BBC sitcom "Oh, Doctor Beeching!".

Future use of the vehicle includes acting as an information point at the forthcoming 1960's weekend on the SVR (3rd & 4th August), Junior Club outing to the West Somerset Railway and a visit to a colliery near Neath.

We are grateful to Mr. Rogers for making his coach available to us today and for acting as our driver. Passengers will please show respect for his restoration work by refraining from smoking or drinking alcohol on the coach.
